Before your baby is potty-trained, they'll go through more than 8,000 diapers, which is roughly 250 diapers per month, meaning you'll be changing your little one about 250 times. To minimize the impact of all these changes on the environment, we offer various eco-friendly alternatives on our website, such as Muumi. And to make changing your baby as easy as possible, we've compiled a series of handy diaper hacks in this blog!

Tips for preparing to change your baby

1. Place the clean diaper under your little one

Make sure you have the clean diaper, wipes, and bin for the dirty diaper ready to go. It can be helpful to place the clean diaper under your baby with the dirty diaper. This way, you have the new diaper in the correct position as soon as you remove the current one. However, be careful with a poopy diaper, make sure to clean your baby well before laying them down on the clean diaper.

Tips for during your baby's change

2. Distract your baby!

Some babies get very restless during a change, keep them distracted. Talk to your baby, sing a song, play some music, or give them a toy. Also, your baby may have the tendency, especially boys, to pee as soon as the diaper is removed. But we have a hack for that too!

3. Pull the onesie down

One of the best changing hacks that not every parent knows about is that the onesie can also be pulled down. Open the buttons on the shoulder and pull the onesie down, this keeps your baby's upper body clean.

4. Prevent peeing during the change

Before removing the diaper, rub just below the navel with the wipe, this may feel a bit cold for your baby, but it can cause your baby to pee before you remove the diaper. When removing the diaper, hold the wipe over the genital area, if your baby then pees, it will be caught in the wipe.

5. The easiest way to lift your little one

To change the diaper easily, it's best to lift your baby up. Do not do this by the feet or ankles, as this is not good for your baby's hips. The best way is to gently press the feet towards your baby's belly, this will naturally lift your baby up. It takes some practice with one hand, but once you get it, you'll have one hand free to do everything else.

6. Prevent diaper rash

There could be a whole blog dedicated to tips for preventing diaper rash! Here are the main tips briefly:

  • Change your baby regularly. How often you need to change a diaper depends on your baby, but for a newborn baby, it's about 8 times a day.
  • Choose diapers made of soft material with a high absorbency.
  • Choose wipes with natural ingredients!
  • If you use cream after changing, give it enough time to dry before putting on a new diaper.

Tips for after the change

7. How to check if a diaper fits properly?

When the diaper doesn't fit properly, it's uncomfortable for your baby and the diaper doesn't do its job properly. There should be about one finger space between the belly and the diaper edge, then the diaper is tight enough. Also, always check if the leak guards of your baby's diaper are in the correct position. These leak guards are around your baby's legs and should be folded outwards.

8. Prevent diaper leaks

To prevent oferflow, especially in the first few months when your baby still has thinner stools, you can fold the front and back edge of the diaper inward. Take the top part of the edge and fold it inward to create an extra barrier. This can also help if the diaper is still slightly too big for your baby.

9. Make it easier for your future self

To make it even easier for yourself, try to make it a habit to lay out all the items you need for a change in advance for the next change. That way, you're fully prepared for next time!
