More and more people are reflecting on the impact of our everyday choices—even something as ordinary as doing the laundry. That makes perfect sense: detergent can have a major impact on both our skin and the environment. From stubborn chemicals to plastic residues, traditional detergents often leave more behind than you might think.

Why choose an eco-friendly detergent?

More and more people are switching to eco-friendly detergents. Why? We’ll explain in this blog. Traditional detergents are often packed with synthetic fragrances, microplastics, and harsh chemicals that are not only burdensome for the environment, but also for your skin.

Eco-friendly detergents come in many different types and forms. But what exactly are the differences? This article makes that clear as well. One thing is clear: choosing eco means choosing biodegradable ingredients, sustainable production processes, and packaging made from recycled materials. That way you keep your clothes clean while contributing to a healthier planet.

What’s the difference between natural detergents?

Not every “green” detergent is the same. There are major differences in the so-called “active” ingredients—the components that actually remove odours and stains from your clothes. There are also differences in certification between detergents.

Although all detergents at Grace is Green prioritize the environment and quality, they work in very different ways. There are 4 key differences among eco detergents:

Active ingredient (cleaning agent)

The active ingredient is essentially the part of the detergent that cleans your clothes. It removes stains and gets rid of unpleasant smells. Different eco detergents use different active ingredients, ranging from plant-based soap substances (from sugar or coconut oil) to probiotics.

Eco Egg pellets even activate the water in the drum, changing the pH level. This helps loosen dirt, while the Eco Egg supports cleaning mechanically. Read here what our Eco Egg community thought.

Certification and allergy-friendliness

Some detergent brands are specially certified. Ecogenic and certain Planet Pure lines, for example, are certified as suitable for sensitive skin. Other brands focus more on environmental gains, such as Marcel’s Green Soap.

Format and ease of use

How you add detergent can differ greatly by brand. Your choice therefore depends on your personal preferences and needs. Liquid detergents like Ecogenic work the way you’re used to. The Eco Egg, for example, goes directly into the washing drum. Want to get truly creative? Make your own detergent with Hello Simple.

End-of-life

Although all Grace is Green detergents are an eco-friendly alternative to conventional detergents, the way brands reduce waste differs. For instance, Byoms and Ecogenic make bottles from 100% recycled plastic. The Eco Egg lasts for years and is even refillable. Planet Pure soap nuts and the packaging from Mulieres and Hello Simple leave almost nothing behind!

Different types of sustainable detergents explained

Within our assortment, you can broadly distinguish three types of eco detergent: probiotic, allergy-friendly, and eco-conscious all-round washing. These characteristics don’t exclude each other, but brands place different emphasis depending on the product.

You’ll find detergents that work with probiotics: they tackle odour and dirt in a completely natural way, using natural substances that fight grime in your clothes. Then there are allergy-friendly variants, fragrance-free and certified. Finally, there are the eco-conscious all-rounders that not only wash well, but also minimize their impact on the planet. This

Washing with probiotics: how does Byoms work?

Byoms has single-handedly sparked a small revolution in the world of detergents. It introduced a revolutionary way of cleaning: instead of killing bacteria, Byoms adds good bacteria—probiotics. These “eat” the source of unpleasant odours and remain active on your clothes for up to 8 days. Want to know more? Read our blog.

The benefits are endless. You need to wash far less often, saving energy and water. It’s also perfect for sportswear or items you want to freshen up without a full wash. Lastly, the bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic and the ingredients are completely harmless to water quality.

Allergy-friendly washing: why choose Ecogenic?

If you have sensitive skin, or you’re washing for a baby, Ecogenic is a very good and safe choice. Like many Byoms products, Ecogenic products are AllergyCertified. This means they have been independently tested by experts for allergens and other harmful substances that can damage or irritate sensitive skin.

Ecogenic detergents are free from synthetic fragrances and dyes, SLES, chlorine, and parabens. All products are also 100% vegan and cruelty-free, certified by the Vegan Society.

Eco-friendly washing: Planet Pure’s approach

If you want to maximize environmental benefits, Planet Pure is a great choice. This Austrian brand has been a leader in eco laundry for years and was the first brand with certified organic cleaning products. The detergents are made with ingredients of natural origin, are biodegradable, and free from microplastics and synthetic fragrances.

Planet Pure’s broad approach to sustainability makes it especially interesting. Think packaging made from recycled plastic or cardboard, as well as innovative soap nuts. These are compostable and leave virtually nothing behind. That makes Planet Pure ideal if you want clean laundry and are critical about packaging, ingredients, and waste.

Which choice fits your laundry routine?

In the end, there’s no single “best” detergent—only a detergent that fits you best. Dealing with odours? Choose probiotic washing. If your skin is easily irritated or you have a skin allergy, you’ll be well served with an AllergyCertified option. And if your main goal is doing good for the environment, you can find a fit anywhere ;)

Chances are that once you switch, you won’t want to go back to your old routine. Eco detergents have natural benefits—and you’ll notice them with every wash.
