Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organization founded in 1994, committed to sustainable forestry. FSC's eco-labels apply to wood and derived products, including many paper applications. An FSC label guarantees that a product comes from responsibly managed forests and / or recycled material.
The 3 label variants
- FSC 100%
This label indicates that the product comes entirely from FSC certified forest (es).
- FSC Mix
This label indicates that the product comes from a production process in which FSC material is mixed with recycled material and / or controlled material. Each product with an FSC mix label represents at least 70% FSC-worthy material (from FSC forest or recycle).
- FSC recycled
This label indicates that a product is made from 100% recycled wood or recycled fiber.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) promotes ecologically responsible, socially correct and economically viable forest management worldwide. The members of FSC are representatives of environmental and social groups (such as environmental organizations or representatives of indigenous peoples) and economic operators from the timber sector and trade, the paper sector or forest managers around the world.
Important forest management principles of FSC
- Ecosystem services: The economic value created by the forests must be fed back to the management of the forests.
- Pesticides policy: reduce the use of chemical pesticides in FSC-certified forests and plantations
- Protecting the forests: by using high conservation values.
- Conservation of forest landscapes: through fragmentation of large-scale
forest landscapes (think of the rainforests of Brazil).
Compliance with FSC guidelines is monitored by independent accredited inspection bodies.
