The KeepCup Story

KeepCup was founded by brother and sister Jamie and Abigail Forsyth. In 1998, they opened a café in Melbourne. Jamie and Abigail noticed that they were using a lot of disposable plastic. To reduce this, they developed reusable coffee cups that were easy to pour coffee into. The first sustainable coffee cups were sold in 2009. Over the years, the company has expanded to various locations, such as LA and London. In addition, new variants and types of sustainable coffee cups from KeepCup have been introduced to the market and the coffee cups have received several environmentally friendly certificates.

KeepCup production process

Origin of materials

The glass and plastic of the products are manufactured in China and shipped to Australia in cardboard packaging. This cardboard is reused as filler material in the packaging that goes to the customer. This way the coffee cups are well protected during delivery. The silicone is also manufactured in China, because this is the only place where good quality silicone is produced. The cork of the cork bands is made from cork waste from local wine cork plantations in Portugal.

Locally produced → less transport

The various components of the reusable cups are all assembled by hand in the KeepCup Hubs. This way, the entire production process is in one location. One of these hubs is in Australia and the other in England. This local production is a green step towards a circular economy. That is why KeepCup, after much success, opened a factory in England in 2016.

KeepCup not only produces reusable coffee cups, but sees it as their responsibility to actively contribute to environmentally conscious entrepreneurship – far beyond simply offering an alternative to disposable cups.

1. B Corp certification since 2014

KeepCup was officially recognised as a Certified B Corporation in Australia in 2014. This is a seal of approval for companies that meet high standards in the areas of environment, social impact and transparency. In 2024, the company achieved an impressive B Corp score of 121.8 (minimum score for certification is 80). This score reflects their continued commitment to quality and sustainability.

2. Use of solar energy

KeepCup uses solar panels on the roofs of its distribution centers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize its carbon footprint.

3. In-depth Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

KeepCup is one of the few companies in the industry that has had a full Life Cycle Analysis performed. This research analyses the environmental impact of a product from production to end of life. The results show:

  • KeepCup Original and Brew have lower CO₂ emissions than disposable cups after just 24 uses .
  • The analysis also shows that good maintenance (such as efficient dishwashing) contributes to a lower impact and a longer lifespan of the product.

4. Collaboration with sustainability experts

KeepCup works closely with the independent agency Edge Environment to compare the ecological footprint of the products with alternatives (both disposable and other reusable materials). This provides reliable, scientifically based information for consumers and companies.

5. Member of Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) - since 2019

As a member of this organization, KeepCup represents reusable solutions in policy advice for sustainable packaging and circular systems that they also apply in their own production process.
