Totally Chlorine Free
If a product has an ecolabel 'Chlorine Free' on it, then no chlorine is used in the processing of the product. Chlorine is mainly used for bleaching wood pulp.
Products that have been bleached with chlorine can be very harmful to the environment and especially to the aquatic environment, i.e. rivers, streams, lakes, and the sea, due to the AOX emissions released by the use of chlorine.
There are various eco-labels for chlorine use. Grace is Green products come under the Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) ecolabel. This means that no chlorine-containing substances are used in bleaching. Other labels such as Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) do use chlorine dioxide. For bleaching according to TCF, hydrogen peroxide is often used together with ozone and peracetic acid.
