Are you searching for a sustainable sunscreen this summer? Then you’ve probably come across zinc oxide sunscreen. But what is zinc oxide exactly? What does it do on your skin? And how does mineral sunscreen actually work? In this blog, we take a closer look at the ingredients in our mineral sunscreen and answer the most frequently asked questions. That way, you’ll know exactly what you’re putting on your skin – and together we move one step closer to planet-friendly living.

What is zinc oxide?

Zinc oxide is the ingredient that protects your skin from the sun in most mineral sunscreens. It’s a mineral that naturally occurs in nature, but it can also be produced synthetically. Thanks to its many active properties, zinc oxide is a popular ingredient in both cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

As a broad-spectrum UV filter, zinc oxide sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. This helps to prevent sunburn and slows down signs of skin aging.

What does zinc oxide do on your skin?

Zinc oxide does more than just protect you from the sun. It also has a mild drying effect and is widely used in pharmaceutical products such as:

  • Sunscreen – Zinc oxide particles sit on top of the skin and act as a physical UV filter. This is the active ingredient in most mineral sunscreens.

  • Cold sores – Zinc oxide helps dry out the skin and reduces pain and itching. It’s often sold as zinc ointment, paste, or cream in pharmacies.

  • Eczema – In cases of weeping eczema, zinc oxide ointments help to dry and soothe the skin and reduce itching. Your doctor may prescribe this.

Tip: Dealing with dry skin?
Zinc oxide can have a drying effect. If your skin feels a bit tight after using mineral sunscreen, follow up with a gentle, hydrating body lotion or day cream. That way you can enjoy the sunshine and keep your skin glowing!

How does mineral sunscreen work?

Environmentally friendly:
When chemical sunscreens wash off into the water, they release harmful substances. But when zinc oxide sunscreen enters the water, it slowly dissolves and turns into zinc ions – a natural component already found in the ocean.

Although some studies suggest that a higher concentration of zinc ions could affect marine life, the environmental impact of zinc oxide sunscreen is likely minimal compared to pollution from industrial sources. Right now, it’s considered one of the safest and most eco-conscious options available.

Better for your skin too:
Our mineral sunscreen contains non-nano zinc oxide particles, which means they are too large to penetrate the skin. Instead, they stay on the surface and reflect both UVA and UVB rays. That makes them a great option for sensitive skin and daily protection.

Why choose mineral sunscreen?

Zinc oxide sunscreen offers several benefits compared to traditional (chemical) sunscreens:

  • Traditional sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, while zinc oxide reflects them.

  • Zinc oxide provides immediate protection – no need to wait after applying.

  • The particles stay on your skin, making irritation less likely.

  • Zinc oxide is reef-safe, meaning it’s safe to use even in tropical waters.

  • No harmful additives – just like this Sol de Ibiza mineral sunscreen.

Which zinc oxide sunscreen will you take with you?

Getting ready for sunny days? Before heading out, don’t forget to check the expiration date on your sunscreen. Whether you choose this zinc oxide sunscreen or one of our other sustainable, hypoallergenic options, ordering early means you're all set for a carefree summer in the sun!
