Menstrual cups

A menstrual cup is a practical and sustainable alternative to disposable menstrual products. Get yours now and experience all the benefits. Want to know what they are? Read on!

What is a menstrual cup?

A menstrual cup is a small, flexible cup that is folded and inserted into the vagina to collect menstrual blood. They are an alternative to sanitary pads, tampons, or panty liners. There are two types of menstrual cups: reusable and disposable. Both have a vacuum effect. Because they are folded and then unfolded in the vagina, leakage is prevented. This makes the cup a good solution for many women during their cycle.

A menstrual cup is a good alternative to disposable menstrual products. Just look at tampons: a woman uses an average of 9,600 of them in her lifetime. That creates a tremendous amount of waste and is also very expensive. A menstrual cup, on the other hand, offers a low risk of leakage and is designed to last for years.

How does a menstrual cup work?

A menstrual cup is a small container you insert into your vagina. It's important to have the right size for comfort and, more importantly, good protection. See the "Cleaning Your Period" section for more information about washing your cup for the first time. You should do this before inserting it for the first time. If the cup is hygienic, it's ready to use. You can insert it now. Don't worry, we've created a 6-step plan for you:

  1. Wash your hands
  2. Fold the menstrual cup between your thumb and index finger. Read this helpful article from LINDA to find out exactly how to do this. Also read the instructions and product description for your cup.
  3. To make insertion easier, wet the cup with water or a water-based lubricant.
  4. Insert the menstrual cup horizontally into your vagina. Keep it folded until it's completely inside your vagina.
  5. Now release the menstrual cup, and it will unfold. It should be fully unfolded. If it isn't, try twisting the cup slightly. If you feel a little resistance when you pull on the stem, the cup is correctly positioned.
  6. You've been using the cup for about 8 to 12 hours now. Note: Read the instructions and product description for the safe duration. If you have a heavy period, change the cup more often.

Which menstrual cup?

Grace is Green offers various menstrual cup options, so you can choose the one that suits you best. For example, choose an XL cup if you experience heavier menstrual flow. The larger the size, the greater the capacity. There are also differences in stem, durability, and firmness. Here are some examples of menstrual cups we recommend:

1. Merula cup

The Merula cup is a great option and a bestseller. It can be used for years, has a large capacity, and is very comfortable. Our customers are very positive. TamaraMK wrote:

Easy to install. I used a different kind, but I couldn't get it to work properly. Then I found this one through Google; it's really great and easy to use. Perfect color!

2. Ginger Organic Menstrual Cup

Looking for a comfortable, standard cup? The Ginger Organic menstrual cup is available in various sizes and has been extensively safety-tested. It's also made of recyclable material.

3. Selenacare and Sileu

Besides Ginger Organic and Merula, we also offer other brands of menstrual cups. These vary in firmness, stem, and size. Selenacare offers the most sizes (S, M, and L) and has a flexible, standard stem. This menstrual cup also lasts up to 5 years! DivineCup, the last in stock, offers two sizes (S, L) and various firmness options: firm or soft. These cups also have a short stem or a loop. Finally, Sileu also offers two sizes (S, L), a ball-shaped stem, and is quite firm (8/10)!

How do I know if a menstrual cup is safe?

We don't need to explain that a menstrual cup must be safe. You insert it into a vulnerable part of your body, so it's crucial that it's not only sterile but also free of harmful substances. That's why at Grace is Green, we carefully consider the materials and certifications a product carries before including it in our collection.

Materials - BPA-free

Menstrual cups are made of safe materials, free from harmful additives. For example, the Merula cup is made of medical-grade silicone , free from chemical additives like plastics. Many cups are made of TPE, a thermoplastic elastomer. This is not only extremely soft and flexible, but also safe, making it widely used in skincare and baby products. It is also BPA-free.

Merula cup

The Merula cup is a very popular menstrual cup in the Grace is Green range. It not only comes with a handy storage pouch for between cycles, but is also very comfortable and has a large capacity. There's also an XL size, specifically for those with heavier menstrual flow. Customer experiences with the Merula cup are very positive. HIM666 says:

Since the birth of my second child, my previous cup leaked, and I couldn't find one that stayed in place without leaks. I have a retroverted uterus and mild vaginal prolapse—no problem with this cup! Easy to insert and leak-free! I'm so happy to be able to wear a cup again, and it's comfortable too!

Cleaning your menstrual cup

You clean your menstrual cup yourself after each use. This extends its lifespan, which is good for the environment and your wallet. Cleaning takes just a few steps, which we've listed here. Period underwear is also a good alternative to disposable menstrual products. Want to know more? Read our blog post about How do period underwear work? 17 frequently asked questions.

1. Before and after your cycle

It's recommended to boil the cup before and after your period. Do this before your first use as well! This sterilizes the cup and removes bacteria that can cause irritation or vaginal infections. Soak the menstrual cup in boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes.

2. After use

After use, rinse the cup with cold tap water. Do not use soap or perfume! These products can damage the cup and be harmful to your vagina.

3. Storage

Store your clean menstrual cup in a dry, clean place, preferably at room temperature. Don't worry! The Merula cup comes with a handy storage pouch.
