Which SPF Sunscreen Should I Choose? 5 Tips to Decide
Not sure which SPF sunscreen you need? These 5 tips will help you step into summer protected and prepared. Whether it’s SPF 30 or 50 — this guide helps you make the right choice for your skin.

Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from harmful effects of the sun like sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. But which SPF sunscreen is right for you? Still unsure? These tips will help you choose. Using the correct SPF is key to effective sun protection. Here are five factors to consider when deciding which sunscreen to go for.

1. Determine Your Skin Type
Skin types vary greatly and affect how quickly you burn or tan. Generally, skin types are classified into six categories, from very fair skin with minimal pigment (Type I) to very dark, deeply pigmented skin (Type VI).
If you have very fair skin (Types I and II), you burn quickly and should use a higher SPF — at least SPF 30 or higher. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours.
Types III and IV can usually go with SPF 20–25, but if spending extended time in the sun, choose SPF 30 or 50(+).
Types V and VI may get by with a lower SPF like SPF 15, but it’s still important to protect against UV radiation. For longer sun exposure, SPF 30 is a safer choice.

2. Adjust SPF Based on the UV Index
Your ideal SPF depends on the strength of the UV index — which measures the level of ultraviolet radiation at a specific time and place. The higher the index, the stronger the radiation and the greater the burn risk. On high UV index days (6+), go for a higher SPF like SPF 50. On low index days (0–2), SPF 15 may be enough.
Check your weather app or a reliable website for the daily UV index to prepare ahead.
3. What Time of Day Are You in the Sun?
The sun’s intensity changes throughout the day. Between 10 AM and 4 PM, UV radiation is at its peak. Especially between 12 PM and 3 PM, it’s best to avoid direct sunlight altogether. Bring an umbrella, chill in the shade, or schedule your outdoor time for later in the afternoon.
Planning to be in the sun during peak hours? Choose a higher SPF than usual — SPF 30 or 50 — and reapply more often than the typical two-hour window.

4. SPF 30 or 50? Think About Your Activity
What you’re doing in the sun matters when choosing sunscreen. Here’s how different activities affect your SPF needs:
Exercising/Sports: Pick a sweat-resistant sunscreen and consider reapplying more frequently. If you’re working out in the sun, opt for a higher SPF like SPF 30 or 50.
Swimming: Go for a water-resistant sunscreen and apply at least 30 minutes before getting wet so it can absorb properly.
Snorkeling or swimming under direct sunlight? Reapply more often, choose a high SPF, and consider wearing a rash guard or UV-protective swim shirt. Water intensifies the sun's effects, so applying sunscreen every hour may be necessary.
Tip: If you’re snorkeling or diving in tropical areas, be sure to use a reef-safe sunscreen. Some common chemicals in conventional sunscreens harm coral reefs. Look for labels that say “reef-safe” or “coral-friendly.”
5. Your Age and Skin Sensitivity Matter
Age plays a big role in sunscreen needs. Babies, children, and older adults have thinner, more sensitive skin that burns more easily. That’s why higher SPF (like SPF 30 or 50) is often recommended for them. Look for specially formulated sunscreens that are gentle on sensitive skin and free from harsh ingredients.
