Menstrual Disc vs. Cup: Which One Is Right for You?
The menstrual disc and cup are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. They are sustainable solutions for your period that are also practical and affordable. However, we notice that many people don't yet know everything about the disc and cup. That's why we'll explain the differences in this blog.

When do you use a menstrual disc and when a cup? How do you clean a disc properly, and can you wear it during sports? And are there many differences between a disc and a cup? In this blog, we'll give you all the answers.
What is a menstrual disc and how does it work?
A menstrual disc is a flat disc that collects your menstrual flow. Unlike a tampon or cup, a disc is placed high in the vagina, just below the cervix. This is very practical and also comfortable for you: it remains comfortable whether you're sitting, standing, or moving.
A menstrual disc doesn't create a vacuum seal, whereas the cup does. This often makes it feel more comfortable and easier to insert. A disc can be worn for up to 12 hours, depending on where you are in your cycle. As with other internal menstrual products, wearing it too long can cause health issues, so approximately 8 hours of wear is recommended.

How do I insert a menstrual disc?
Using a disc for the first time? Then insertion may take some getting used to. We totally understand that. That's why we've created a brief step-by-step guide for you. Are there any unclear points? Then read this info sheet from UMC Utrecht. Here's how to insert the menstrual disc in 4 steps:
- Wash your hands. Wet the disc if desired. Press the edges of the disc together with your thumb and index finger.
- Insert while on the toilet, standing with one leg on a stool, or squatting.
- Spread your labia and slide the disc diagonally backward, with the opening facing up into your vagina. Push the disc as far back as possible. The disc will rest against the cervix.
- Push the rim slightly upward. This way the disc sits somewhat diagonally and behind your pubic bone. This minimizes the chance of leaking.
For more tips, read the section "How do you switch from tampons or pads to a menstrual disc?" later in this blog.
How do I remove a menstrual disc?
- Wash your hands
- Sit on the toilet
- Hook your fingertip behind the rim of the menstrual disc. Bear down slightly if needed.
- Gently pull your disc out of your vagina. Keep it as horizontal as possible.
- Empty the disc into the toilet, rinse with water (optionally with mild, natural soap). You can reinsert it right away!
What is a menstrual cup and how does it work?
A cup is also a sustainable alternative to disposable pads and tampons. It's a funnel-shaped, flexible silicone cup that you wear internally, but less deep than the disc. Just like the menstrual disc, the cup collects more blood than a tampon.
You can use a cup for about 8 to 12 hours, including while urinating, swimming, and exercising. Before and after your period, you need to sterilize it. You do this by boiling it according to the included instructions. Do this without soap or other harsh products. These can disrupt the pH balance.
Cups are nearly waste-free because they're reusable. In the long term, a cup, just like a menstrual disc, is also cost-effective because you don't need to buy tampons, pads, or panty liners.
What are the main differences between a menstrual disc and a cup?
| Aspect | Menstrual Disc | Menstrual Cup |
|---|---|---|
| During sex | Can be easily worn during sex without feeling it or being bothered by it. | Use during sex is possible but not ideal. It may be noticeable and the vacuum seal can be broken. |
| Placement | Placement can be tricky at first - practice makes perfect. | Can be tricky at first. The vacuum provides a secure seal, but many people find this less comfortable. Also pay attention to the size. |
| Capacity | Collects more fluid than a menstrual cup (30 to 70ml). A tampon has a capacity of 8 to 10ml. | Suitable for heavy to moderate flow. Can be worn for up to 12 hours. Better to empty after 8 hours. |

Does a cup or menstrual disc fit your lifestyle?
You're probably wondering whether a menstrual disc or cup suits you better with different situations in mind: sports, sex, long days, or even traveling. That's why we've outlined a few scenarios for you:
- Sex. While a cup can sometimes be felt because you insert it less deep into your vagina, with a disc you won't be bothered by your menstrual product. Because it sits against the cervix, you feel little to nothing from it. This is a major advantage of discs.
- Sports. Both a cup and menstrual disc can be worn comfortably during sports or other physical activities. If you insert them properly, you won't experience any problems while swimming either. It doesn't hurt to rinse your disc or cup after swimming. Note: the disc can shift during movement. That's why we recommend using an additional product (such as a pad) during vigorous exercise.
- Travel and long days. Because discs don't need to be inserted with a vacuum seal, they often get in the way less during long days. However, due to the long wear time, both the cup and menstrual disc can be worn comfortably for up to 8-12 hours.
The differences between a cup and menstrual disc are small, but it's important to consider them carefully before making a choice. For example, you might prefer the lower placement of the menstrual cup.
Can you use a menstrual disc with an IUD?
Do you have an IUD? Then a vacuum in the vagina isn't always comfortable. In that case, choose a menstrual disc, but only after consulting with a gynecologist: the IUD string can potentially get caught between the rim of the disc and the cervix. For more information, read the Menstruatiedisk website or UMC Utrecht.
How do you switch from tampons or pads to a menstrual disc?
It can take some getting used to when switching to a reusable menstrual product like a menstrual disc. Many people have been accustomed to using conventional products since childhood: tampons, panty liners, and pads. That's why we have two things for you to keep in mind for first-time use:
Tips for first-time use:
- Start on a day without heavy flow. This way you can practice calmly.
- Is insertion difficult? Then use some water or water-based lubricant. This makes insertion easier.
- It's best to insert the disc while on the toilet, standing with one leg on a stool or squatting. But the first time it might work better to lie on your bed.
- Breathe out and relax. This also works well when removing it.
- The first few times, also use a panty liner or period underwear to catch any leaks.
Common mistakes
- Placing the disc too low can lead to leaking. So place the menstrual disc as far back as possible, against the cervix. Take your time.

How do you ensure a menstrual disc lasts long?
During use, it's sufficient to empty and rinse the menstrual disc without soap, with water (or use mild, 100% natural soap). If you're storing the disc temporarily, keep it in the included pouch or sleeve. This allows it to air out. It's normal for the disc to discolor over time.
How do you know which size menstrual disc you need?
Different discs have different sizes. Therefore, always read the product descriptions, tips, and sizing charts carefully. At Grace is Green, we offer a menstrual disc from Selenacare. It's made of 100% medical-grade silicone and provides up to 8 hours of protection.
The Selenacare menstrual disc comes in two sizes, based on cervix height. If you have a higher cervix, choose size M. For a low cervix (think 4.4cm or shorter), choose size S.

- A disc is equivalent to up to 3000 tampons in terms of waste?
- You can wear a disc for 8-12 hours, depending on brand and model?
- You can exercise normally (including swimming!) with the menstrual disc? Swimming, cycling, dancing, and sleeping through the night without worries.
Do users recommend a menstrual disc?
At Grace is Green, we offer the Selenacare menstrual disc. It's popular in various countries, such as Germany. Here's a selection of reviews the disc received there:
"I would definitely buy it again. The menstrual disc is much better than a cup. No vacuum that causes pain. Emptying is also simple and nothing leaked. The cup was a bigger risk." Sumi, 5 stars
"I would absolutely recommend it, I love this! After 2 children, my periods are quite heavy. So with tampons I'm constantly busy. But this disc is amazing. Sometimes I even forget I'm on my period. You don't feel anything and it stays in place well at the gym." - Josii, 5 stars
"I'm satisfied. It's very comfortable - you basically don't feel anything. You can just go to the bathroom and go about your day without worrying about anything. I didn't find insertion and removal difficult. A disadvantage is that you can't empty it just anywhere. Still, I recommend it." - ca14ra, 5 stars
Frequently asked questions about the menstrual disc
Can I use the menstrual disc during sex?
The menstrual disc sits closer to the cervix than the menstrual cup. Many users therefore find it more comfortable during sex: it causes little to no obstruction. It's smart to empty the disc beforehand.
The disc may be harder to remove after sex. Then wait 30 minutes so the disc returns to its original position.
What are the disadvantages of the menstrual disc?
Insertion is a skill that takes some getting used to. So take your time and practice in a relaxed manner. Also, running water isn't always available in public spaces. Then take a bottle of water with you if needed.
During intensive activities, the disc can potentially shift. Then there's a risk of leakage. We recommend having period underwear or pads as backup.
