Skin Allergies: No Longer a Rare Problem
27% of Europeans have a chronic contact allergy. That's more than 10% higher than 10 years ago. A contact allergy is a hypersensitive reaction to certain substances, also known as allergens. It's also a form of skin allergy that you develop at an early age. Children are constantly exposed to allergens and other harmful substances through everyday products.
Many people aren't aware of this. That's not surprising at all, since allergens are found in all kinds of daily products like skincare, cleaning products, and even diapers.
To tackle this major problem, the well-known Danish certification AllergyCertified has launched a campaign together with sustainable supplier IBD (Ik Ben Duurzaam) called Skin Heroes. As part of this initiative, daycare centers are provided with a fully hypoallergenic range. Read more about this project in this blog.
Why Allergy-Friendly Is Becoming Increasingly Important
Skin allergies are therefore no longer a rarity. 27% is too much, and that number continues to rise. It's becoming clear that what was once seen as a problem for people with 'sensitive skin' is gradually becoming relevant to everyone. And perhaps even more concerning: you often develop such an allergy at a young age.
The skin of babies and young children is more flexible, but also thinner and more vulnerable than that of adults. At the same time, they're the ones who come into contact with allergens most frequently, for example through toys, diapers, or cleaned surfaces.
Allergy-friendliness is therefore not just about preventing a red spot or minor irritation, but really about reducing the risks of a long-term skin allergy. Prevention is essential - especially for young children.
What Is AllergyCertified?
AllergyCertified is an independent, international certification from Denmark that evaluates products for their risk of skin allergies. The certification was founded by toxicologists who were also deeply aware of the problem of contact allergies.
The toxicologists evaluate purity, exposure, and concentration. All to keep the allergy risk as low as possible. Different standards are used: ingredients like fragrance are completely excluded, while others are only permitted in small quantities.

How Do You Recognize AllergyCertified Yourself?
You can recognize AllergyCertified products by the visual certification mark, or look them up in the ingredient and brand index. Fortunately, you don't need to be an expert for this. On the contrary: it's actually extremely simple!
AllergyCertified is ambitious and can already be found on many products. If this isn't the case and you still want to be sure? Then use the handy ingredient index. There you'll see the pros and cons of each product, and whether AllergyCertified would approve it.
Myth vs. Fact - AllergyCertified Edition
Not true: "Natural automatically means hypoallergenic or allergy-friendly"
True: Many natural ingredients, such as certain oils, can actually cause an allergic reaction.
Not true: "All certified products are 100% allergy-free"
True: AllergyCertified doesn't offer a 100% guarantee of freedom from allergies. However, products with the certification are extensively tested for skin-friendliness. If something does go wrong, AllergyCertified addresses it immediately.
