How well does period swimwear work?
A period swimsuit or bikini is designed to keep you comfortable and protected while swimming, even when you're on your period. This type of swimsuit has special layers so you don't have to worry about leaks. The period swimsuit by Cheeky is made up of 4 different layers, each with its own function:
- The first layer: This layer is in direct contact with your skin and is made of a soft, moisture-wicking fabric. It keeps you feeling dry and comfortable.
- The second layer: This is the absorbent layer, which catches your menstrual blood. This layer can absorb as much fluid as two tampons.
- The third layer: This layer is waterproof and makes sure no blood leaks through the swimsuit. It gives you extra peace of mind and confidence while swimming.
- The fourth layer: This is the outer layer, made of a stretchy, durable fabric that resembles that of a regular swimsuit. It makes the swimsuit look stylish and fit your body nicely.
The swimsuit received a 5/5 star review from Riet: “This wasn't our first choice, as we'd ordered something elsewhere first, but what a disappointing order that turned out to be. Then we ordered here, where we also buy the briefs. Our daughter (14) is over the moon: it looks fantastic on her, she feels good in it and there's room for her to grow without it being baggy.”
Does it look different from a regular swimsuit?
It looks just like a regular swimsuit, because the outer layer is made of material that resembles a normal swimsuit. It's designed to have the same fit and style, so you don't have to worry about looking any different. You also can't tell that the swimsuit has an absorbent lining. Most brands make their period swimwear in darker colours, so you have even less to worry about in case of a leak. Period swimwear is discreet and practical, so you can feel just as confident as in your usual swimsuit!
Can you swim on your period with a heavy flow?
Even with a heavy flow, you can swim on your period. If you have heavy periods, you may wonder whether a period swimsuit offers enough protection. It can absorb as much as two regular tampons. With a heavy flow, however, it's a good idea to combine the swimsuit with extra protection, such as a tampon or a menstrual cup. That way you can enjoy your swim without worrying about leaks.
Tip: The Merula cup is also available in a larger size, so with a heavy flow you can answer the question can you swim on your period with a wholehearted yes.
Can you swim in period underwear?
No, period underwear isn't designed for swimming. You can swim on your period, but choose a period swimsuit instead, for example. There are several reasons why period underwear can't be compared with period swimwear:
- Period swimwear has a waterproof layer that stops pool or sea water from being absorbed by the absorbent lining; with period underwear, that does happen. As a result, period underwear soaks up a lot of water and can no longer absorb your menstrual blood.
- For the same reason, period underwear doesn't stop menstrual blood from leaking out. Period swimwear makes sure blood doesn't leak into the water; with period underwear, it can.
Finally, period underwear also looks different from swimwear, because it's made from a different material. If you don't mind that, it's perfectly fine to wear beside the water, but for in the water: choose period swimwear!
Prefer something other than this swimwear? Then consider natural tampons or the Merula cups.
