When should you use a menstrual disc and when a cup? How do you best wash a disc, and can you wear it while exercising? And are there many differences between a disc and a cup? In this blog, we give you all the answers.
What is a menstrual disc and how does it work?
A menstrual disc is a flat disc that collects your period. Unlike a tampon or cup, a disc is placed high in the vagina, just below the cervix. This is very practical and also comfortable for you: it stays in place comfortably whether you are sitting, standing, or moving.
A menstrual disc does not create a vacuum, whereas a cup does. This often makes it feel more comfortable and easier to insert. A disc can be worn for up to 12 hours, depending on the time in your cycle. As with other internal menstrual products, wearing it for too long can cause health problems, so wearing it for approximately 8 hours is recommended.

How do I insert a menstrual disc?
Are you using a disc for the first time? Then inserting it may take some getting used to. We completely understand that. That's why we have created a short step-by-step plan for you. Are there any uncertainties? Then read this info sheet from the UMC Utrecht. This is how you insert the menstrual disc in 4 steps:
- Wash your hands. Wet the disc if necessary. Press the edges of the disc together with your thumb and index finger.
- Insert it while on the toilet, standing with one leg on a stool, or squatting.
- Spread your labia and slide the disc in at an angle, with the opening facing up into your vagina. Push the disc as far back as possible. The disc will rest against the cervix.
- Push the edge slightly upwards. This way, the disc lies slightly diagonally and behind your pubic bone. This minimizes the risk of leaking.

How do I remove a menstrual disc?
- Wash your hands.
- Sit on the toilet.
- Hook your fingertip behind the edge of the menstrual disc. If necessary, bear down slightly.
- Gently pull the disc out of your vagina. Keep it as horizontal as possible.
- Empty the disc into the toilet, rinse it with water (optionally using mild, natural soap). You can reinsert it right away!
What is a menstrual cup and how does it work?
A cup is also a sustainable alternative to disposable pads and tampons. It is a funnel-shaped, flexible, silicone cup that you wear internally, but not as deeply as the disc. Just like the menstrual disc, the cup collects more blood than a tampon.
You can use a cup for about 8 to 12 hours, also while urinating, swimming, and exercising. You must sterilize the menstrual disc before and after use. You do this by boiling it according to the provided instructions. Do this without soap or other harsh agents, as these can disrupt the pH balance.
Cups are almost waste-free because they are reusable. In the long term, a cup, just like a menstrual disc, is cost-effective because you don't need to buy tampons, pads, or panty liners.

Does a cup or menstrual disc fit your lifestyle?
You are probably looking at whether a menstrual disc or cup suits you better with various situations in mind: sports, sex, long days, or even travel. That's why we have listed a few situations for you:
- Sex. While a cup is sometimes noticeable because you insert it less deeply into your vagina, you won't be bothered by your menstrual product with a disc. Because it sits against the cervix, you feel little to nothing of it. This is a big advantage of discs.
- Sports. You can wear both a cup and a menstrual disc comfortably during sports or other physical activities. If you insert them correctly, you won't experience any problems while swimming either. It doesn't hurt to rinse your disc or cup after swimming. Note: the disc can shift during movement. Therefore, we advise using an extra product (such as a pad) during heavy exercise.
- Travel and long days. Because discs do not need to be inserted via a vacuum, they are often less in the way during long days. However, due to the long usage time, you can wear both the cup and the menstrual disc comfortably for up to 8-12 hours.
The differences between a cup and a menstrual disc are small, but it is important to take a good look at them before making a choice. For example, you might find the lower placement of the menstrual cup more comfortable.
Can you use a menstrual disc with an IUD?
Do you have an IUD? Then a vacuum in the vagina is not always pleasant. In that case, choose a menstrual disc, but only after consulting a gynecologist: the IUD string could potentially get trapped between the edge of the disc and the cervix. For more information, read the website of Menstruatiedisk or the UMC Utrecht.
How do you make the switch from tampons or pads to a menstrual disc?
Switching to a reusable menstrual product like a menstrual disc can take some getting used to. Many people have been used to dealing with conventional products since childhood: tampons, panty liners, and pads. Therefore, we have two things for you to keep in mind for the first time:
Tips for first-time use:
- Start on a day without a heavy flow. This allows you to practice in peace.
- Is insertion difficult? Use some water or water-based lubricant. This makes insertion easier.
- The best way to insert the disc is on the toilet, standing with one leg on a stool, or squatting. But the first time, it might work better to lie on your bed.
- Exhale and relax. That also works well when removing it.
- Use a panty liner or menstrual underwear the first few times to catch any potential leaks.
Common mistakes
- Placing the disc too low can promote leaking. Therefore, place the menstrual disc as far back as possible, against the cervix. Take your time.

How do you ensure a menstrual disc lasts a long time?
During use, it is sufficient to empty and rinse the menstrual disc without soap, using water (or use mild, 100% natural soap). If you are using the disc temporarily, store it in the included pouch or sleeve. This allows it to air out. It is not unusual for the disc to discolor over time.
How do you know which size menstrual disc you need?
Different discs have different sizes. Therefore, always read the product descriptions, tips, and size charts carefully. At Grace is Green, we offer a menstrual disc from Selenacare. It is made of 100% medical-grade silicone and offers up to 8 hours of protection.
The Selenacare menstrual disc has two sizes, based on the height of the cervix. If you have a high cervix, choose size M. For a low one (think 4.4cm or shorter), choose size S.

Did you know? Menstrual disc edition
Did you know…
- You can wear a disc during sex without (or with very little) hindrance?
- A disc is equivalent to as many as 3000 tampons in terms of waste?
- You can wear a disc for 8-12 hours, depending on the brand and model?
- You can simply exercise (including swimming!) with the menstrual disc? Swimming, cycling, dancing, and sleeping through the night without worries.
Do users recommend a menstrual disc?
At Grace is Green, we offer the Selenacare menstrual disc. It is popular in various countries, such as Germany. This is a selection of the reviews the disc received there:
“I would definitely buy it again. The menstrual disc is much better than a cup. No vacuum that causes pain. Emptying is also simple and nothing leaked. The cup was a bigger risk.” - Sumi, 5 stars
“I would absolutely recommend it, I love this! After 2 children, my periods are quite heavy. So with tampons, I'm busy all the time. But this disc is great. Sometimes I even forget that I'm on my period. You don't feel anything and it stays in place well at the gym.” - Josii, 5 stars
“I am satisfied. It is very comfortable - you basically feel nothing. You can just go to the toilet and get on with your day without worrying about anything. I didn't find the insertion and removal difficult. One downside is that you can't just empty it everywhere. Still, I recommend it.” - ca14ra, 5 stars
Frequently asked questions about the menstrual disc
Can I use the menstrual disc during sex?
The menstrual disc sits closer to the cervix than the menstrual cup. Many users therefore find it more comfortable during sex: it causes little to no obstruction. It is smart to empty the disc beforehand.
It may be that the disc is harder to remove after sex. Wait 30 minutes so that the disc returns to its original position.
What are the disadvantages of the menstrual disc?
Insertion is a skill you have to get used to. So take your time and practice in a relaxed way. Also, running water is not always available in public spaces. In that case, consider carrying a small bottle of water.
During intense activities, the disc might shift. There is then a chance of leakage. We recommend having menstrual underwear or pads as a back-up.
